Square Pie is a supporter of the Orangutan
Foundation and makes a donation of 5% of sales of our potato,
leek and cheese pies to the foundation (about 15p a pie).
This is because we have been told that this what primates
might like in a pie!
So far we have raised over £900 for the foundation,
not quite the Pizza Express Venice appeal but we’ll
get there.

The mission of the Orangutan Foundation International is
to support the conservation and understanding of the orangutan
and its rain forest habitat while caring for ex-captive individuals
as they make their way back to the forest.
Furthermore, OFI promotes the dissemination of information
about the orangutan and its plight in order to galvanize
the public and policy-makers towards an appreciation of the
ape's value and current dilemma so that it might be saved
from extinction.

A bit about the orangutans
Orangutans are in grave danger of extinction because their
rainforest habitat is vanishing at an unprecedented rate.
Palm oil plantations, illegal logging and gold mining within
protected areas have contributed to the loss of 80% of
orangutan habitat in the past twenty years. Orangutan populations
have declined by 50% in the last decade. At this rate of
destruction, the orangutan could be extinct in the wild
in the next ten years.
A million years ago, orangutans lived throughout much of
Southeast Asia. Today they are found only in relic populations
on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. In 1900, there were
approximately 315,000 orangutans. Today there are probably
less than 20,000.
The Orangutan Foundation actively conserves the orangutan
and its habitat whilst conducting long-term research on the
ecology of orangutans and other rainforest fauna and flora
within their habitat. Foundation objectives are to support
conservation work in Indonesia and Malaysia and educate the
public about the orangutan and its habitat, to save this
great ape from extinction. Through a multi-stranded approach
to conservation, the Orangutan Foundation has achieved significant
victories in the urgent battle to save this vulnerable species.
